The concept of "The One" is featured in The Prophecy by the Oracle. The Matrix trilogy features Neo as "The One", being the sixth of all.

The One is for five times, the Savior of the people of Zion. He is a human who has many a power to shape the matrix as he wants. His power extends beyond the Matrix. It reaches from here all the way back to the source of it in the Machine city. Each time Zion is destroyed he transfers 23 persons from the Matrix to Zion to be rehabiliated.

The prophecy of the One was believed by Morpheus and others, however its origins were the previous five. The One was not a messiah as they believed, but someone created by the system iself, being a part of it, in order to evolve it.

Neo broke the chain.

Powers of the One

Neo becomes "the One" step by step, his abilities come gradually.

Period #1: Before meeting Morpheus

• Thomas Anderson fights against the system (selling illegal data, hacking) and alerts authorities. Agent Smith shows Neo a folder with observations and personal data about Neo.

Period #2: Beginning changes

• The One can bend minimal aspect of the matrix (spoon in eng:Oracle's apartment).
• The One has more strength and speed then a skillful eng:rebel like eng:Morpheus and stand in a fight with an eng:Arch-Agent such as eng:Smith (for more then 3.5 minutes)
• The One can move like the eng:Agents to dodge bullets (eng:M1)

The One can sense stimulations of his body from beyond the ilussion of eng:The Matrix (Sensing Trinity's kiss in near the end of eng:M1), somewhere between the 1st Stage and the...

Period #3: After resurrection

• The One has eng:Matrix vision
• The One can enter an eng:Agent and destroy him from within.
• The One can bend the Matrix at will and by gaining enough momentum, he can fly through the air at very high speeds (End of eng:M1).

Period #4: Skill consolidation

• The One has more strength and speed then 50 Arch-Agents (as seen in the eng:Burly Brawl)
• The One can stop bullets effortlessly (Merovingian's eng:castle).
• After gaining momentum by bending eng:The Matrix, The One can fly at very high speeds (to rescue Morpheus from the truck).
• The One has uncontrolled visions from the eng:The Sight (But only in dream-state)

Period #5: After the visit to the eng:Architect

• The One can fly with zero effort (out of the exploding eng:Architect's building). The One also increase his speed by bending the whole matrix into a ventoric tube (to rescue Trinity in eng:M2).
• The One can become semi intangible (Restarts eng:Trinity's heart manually).
• The One has potential to neutralize/combust AI eng:machines even in the eng:Real world (destroying 4 eng:sentinels at the end of eng:M2).
• The One can be in the the Matrix without being eng:plugged in (begining of eng:M3).

Period #6: In/After eng:Mobil Ave

• The One has visions (see eng:The Sight) and knows what to do to fulfill eng:the prophecy.
• The One can neutralize/combust about 16 sentinel worth of AI power (flight to the eng:Machine city).

Pervertial Period: After being blinded

• The One starts to look with his "mind" rather than is eyes. He perceives machines by seeing them in "eng:golden code".<br>"Neo: It's unbelievable, eng:Trin. Lights everywhere. Like the whole thing was built with light. I wish you could see what I see."
• The One perceives machines by seeing them in "eng:golden code"
• The One starts to understand machines

Period #7 :The Ultimate-One (Hypothetical Powers)

In all the versions of eng:The Matrix The One has never reaches this following (bit irrelevant) hypothetical stage:

• The One can control all AI Machines outside of the Matrix.
• The One can fully manipulate The Matrix (Writing programms, Rewriting codes, Deleting Codes).
• The One has incredible speed, strength and can fully beat any program that fights him.
• The One can enter The Matrix without being eng:plugged in.
• The One is immune to any damage done to him in the matrix and can sense
• The One can see inside the minds that are inside the matrix.

How the Oracle tells Neo whether he is the One

Neo meets the Oracle in the eng:Oracle's apartment where he wants to know whether he is the One. Here is their discussion:

• Oracle: "So, what do you think? You think you're the one?"
• Neo: "I don't know."
• Oracle: "You know what that means? It's Latin. Means 'Know thyself'. I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Being the one is just like being in love. No one can tell you your in love, you just know it. Through and through. Balls to bones. Well, I better have a look at you. Open your mouth, say Ahhh."
• Neo: "Ahhh."
• Oracle: "Okay. Now I'm supposed to say, "Umm, that's interesting, but..." then you say..."
• Neo: "But what?"
• Oracle: "But you already know what I'm going to tell you."
• Neo: "I'm not the one."
• Oracle: "Sorry kiddo. You got the gift, but it looks like you're waiting for something."
• Neo: "What?"
• Oracle: Your next life maybe, who knows? That's the way these things go."

This discussion tells us the following:

• It seems that the Oracle denies that Neo is the One, but after a closer look she just says (in her typical Oracl'ish way), that he is waiting for a trigger.
• "You next life maybe" turns out to be correct: Neo is shot by eng:Agent Smith and comes back as the One.
• "Open your mouth" correlates with eng:Swallow and follow
