Zion is the city where humans who were freed from the Matrix live along with humans who were born outside of the eng:cocoons and thus have no plugs for a direct connection from the neural system to the matrix. eg. Tank Link and Dozer

eng:Tank calls Zion "the last human city, the only place we have left.."

Zion is located underground. How deep? In M1 Tank says:

• Tank: "Deep underground, near the earth's core where it's still warm. Live long enough you might even see it."

In Animatrix Thadeus says:

• Thadeus: "Look where we are. 4 kilometres straight down..."
• Jue: "Zion..."

One who is aligned with the cause of Zion and its freedom is reffered to as a Zionite as illustrated in Matrix Online.

Symbolism

• "Zion" = "Scion" (A descendant or heir)
• "Zion" in the sense of "Jerusalem" = the center of belief for world religions
• Lambert Wilson (who plays the Merovingian) mentions in an interview that Zion is related to the "Priory of Zion" (Prieure du Notre Dame du Sion), a secret society, with connections to Knights Templar, Roscicrucianism, Freemasonry, Arthurian and the Holy Grail.
• The name of the machine city is Zero-One which sounds quite similar to "Zion".

• Not to forget "The protocolls of the sages of Zion" and the council of the elders of Zion.
• In the Matrix movies the "Gates of Zion" are mentioned. Isaiah 60:11: "Jehovah says to Zion: 'Your gates will actually be kept open constantly'"
• Rastafarians believe in physical immortality as a part of their religious doctrines. They believe that after their God has called the day of judgement they will go to what they describe as "Mount Zion" in Africa to live in freedom forever. Instead of having everlasting life, which implies an end in the word last, the rastas look forward to having everliving life.
