The Matrix is a computer generated simulation of the world as it was in the nineties (approx. 1999). Via a direct connection to the neural system of human bodies (through eng:plugs) they can interact in this fake world while in the eng:real world they are lying in a cocoon.
The Matrix was created by the Architect.
The Matrix has been redesigned many times. The first versions failed, and an intuitive program was created to find a solution. This program is believed to be The Oracle. She found out the problem was choice, so humans were allowed to have free-will inside The Matrix to keep it from crashing.
Architect (to Neo) about the Matrix: "The Matrix is older than you know... The first Matrix I designed was quite naturally perfect, it was a work of art - flawless, sublime. A triumph equalled only by its monumental failure. The inevitability of its doom is apparent to me now as a consequence of the imperfection inherent in every human being. Thus, I redesigned it based on your history to more accurately reflect the varying grotesqueries of your nature. However, I was again frustrated by failure. I have since come to understand that the answer eluded me because it required a lesser mind, or perhaps a mind less bound by the parameters of perfection."
